Christmas Drive 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Our tenth annual Christmas Drive for 2008 has once again been a wonderful success!!!  With the generous outpouring of support from all of you, we were able to ship 30 boxes of individual gift bags containing toys, clothing, school supplies, personal hygiene items, backpacks, candies, chocolates, teas, music CD’s, hats, scarves, mittens, gloves, and many other items to the children we support, and their caregivers. Special thanks goes out to the Confirmation Class of St. Mary’s Parish in Brookfield, and Sacred Heart Parish in West Brookfield, and their teachers, for their enthusiastic support of this year’s drive. They conducted a special “Bake Sale,” sold Russian Craft items at various events, and collected donations of items and money to help fund postage costs to send the boxes.

There are more than 260 children ages birth to 17 living at the children’s homes we support in Abakan, Siberia. In order to make these children’s lives brighter during this joyous Season, these efforts began here in warm hearted Brookfield in 1999, and are being spread further each year. For the past decade, the Brookfield Fire Battalion; the Brookfield Girl scouts; the staff and students of the Leicester Public Schools, Valley View School, North Brookfield, the Shrewsbury Montessori School; parishioners of St. Mary’s in Brookfield and Sacred Heart in West Brookfield; members of the Brookfield Congregational Church,  Brookfield Unitarian Church, Quaboag Valley Baptist Church, the First Congregational Church of West Brookfield;  and many, many other generous souls (way to numerous to mention here!) have humbled us by their love for these children so far away. We have had responses from all over Massachusetts, New England, and beyond as a result of the outreach effort by our newly incorporated organization, Socks For Siberia, Inc. Know that your kindness is huge and so very much appreciated.

And so, from your friends in Siberia and all of us at Socks For Siberia we say to you….

C’Rozjestvom Kristovim!!!   Merry Christmas!!!

C’Novim Godim!!!    Happy New Year!!!

Please visit our website for updates and photos as the children receive your gifts of Christmas Love!

Blessings to you and yours,

Michele and Wally Connor

Bring “Baseball to Siberia”

During our trip to Abakan during June 2007, we held an event called “Bring Baseball to Siberia”. With the help of local firefighters and teachers,  we conducted a clinic and had two fun games with the boys and girls from the Yoletchka Children’s Home. Prior to our arrival in Abakan, a shipment of balls, bats, uniforms, and other necessary equipment arrived at the orphanage. This was made possible by the generous donation of an anonymous baseball fan, and items collected by the Brookfield Recycling Center. A translated version of the rules, etiquette, and history of the game (provided by Top Shelf Collectibles) had been sent ahead of time to help them prepare for the event.  During the games that we played, the kids enjoyed a positive, fun experience as we taught them this “Great American Pastime”.

Special Thanks to Talbot Embroidery, Southbridge, MA for donating the embroidery and silk screening for the uniforms.
