Current Needs and Projects

The focus for our fundraising efforts right now is the following:

Kuragino Shelter

Our outreach and research into the needs of children in Siberia led us to the village of Kuragino and an emergency shelter and social program for families in crisis. What we found was a program caring for children who have been abandoned, or removed from their families for their safety. It is housed in an old building in desperate need of repair and staffed by wonderfully caring people who are forced to go into the village to ask their neighbors for food in order to provide nutritious meals for the children. Money from their meager budget has gone for coal for heat and hot water. The children have no place to play while at the shelter, and very little in terms of recreation to help to fill their time.

To begin our support (during our recent visit) a month’s worth of non-perishable food and some games and arts and crafts supplies were purchased  and delivered. A monthly Food Allotment was established that will provide needed food through January 2010.

Thanks to a "Simple Supper" sponsored by the First Congregational Church of West Brookfield, MA and specific donations from regular and new supporters of our cause, we have been able to continue the monthly Food Allotment. As of February 25, 2010, we have raised enough money to keep this important program going until August of 2010! Thanks to continued successful Fundraising this year, we have raised enough money to support this monthly Food Allotment through July 2011!  We will travel to visit the Children and orphanages we support once again in July 2011! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

The following are the areas in which you can assist us in our plan for continuing our support:

Renovation of the bathroom and shower room

We have established a fund and need to raise $5,000.00 to renovate the bath and shower room. The walls and ceiling of this room are crumbling plaster, with leaking pipes and mold everywhere. We have obtained a quote for labor and materials from a local contractor who will complete the work at a discount. As of 18 October 2009, we have raised $2000.00 for this project. As of February 25, 2010 we are up to $2800.00! Thank you! As a result of ongoing support of our Annual Festival on June 12, 2010, we are happy to report we have reached our goal of $5000.00 and work is being completed on the shower and bathrooms as of this posting on 19 July 2010! YOU ARE GREAT AND WE ARE GRATEFUL!  THANK YOU!!! An update and pictures to be posted following our trip there in July 2011.

Continuation of monthly food allotment

For $100 per month, we will be able to ensure that the children staying at the shelter will have nutritious food every day without the staff needing to go acquiring the food the children require on their own. As of 18 October 2009, we have raised $290.00 for this fund. As of February 25, 2010 we are up to $700.00. Thank you! As OF July 19, 2010, funds have been raised and provided to our volunteers on the ground in Siberia and the monthly Food Allotment has been funded through July 2011! As of February 2011, reports from our volunteers on the ground in Siberia are happy to report that the Food Allotment is no longer needed due to improved funding in their system. Funds remaining from this fund are now being used to supplement the Kuragino Skills Development and Activities Program.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!!

Assist with construction of a play yard

The director of the shelter has drawn up a modest plan for a play yard for the children in her care. With the help of some people in the neighborhood, she has begun to build a sandbox as a beginning of this worthwhile project. Your donations will assist in purchasing the materials needed to complete the sand box, purchase some outdoor toys and build a swing set to make a safe and fun play area for the children. Our goal for this project is $1000.00. We have allotted $200.00 to begin this fund. As of February 25, 2010 we are up to $400.00 towards our goal. As of July 19, 2010 we are only up to $500.00! This project is still in the active process but we need to raise another $500.00! As of February 2011, we are up to $900.00 for this project. We forecast raising the remaining money needed at our annual Festival and will initiate this project on our trip to visit the children in July 2011. Thank you!!!

Young Leaders Program

We want to continue to sponsor the “School For Young Leaders” program which we sponsored at the beginning of the summer in 2009. The program takes place at the Talovka Camp in the town of Irba providing both summer and winter Camp opportunities. This very worthwhile program teaches independence and self advocacy to children who could otherwise develop a very dependent way of life leading to difficulty when they leave the orphanages.

Outdoor recreational activities as well as many interactive learning activities are also integrated into the program for children of ages six and older. Without our support, these children would not have the opportunity to participate in a program such as this.

As of June 14, 2010 we have been able to fund this project for Summer 2010 and as of November 2010 we have raised funds to continue through the Winter of 2010-11.  THANK YOU!

We are currently starting to fundraise for this very worthwhile program for Summer 2011 and Winter 2011-12.

Minusinsk Recreation and Activities Program

We continue to support the Minusinsk Children's Home following the success of their boy's soccer team "Chance" with funding for recreation, clothing, and activities. We will be reassessing their needs when we meet with them during our upcoming trip in July 2011.
